Other activities
Income generating activities have grown up over the past years. Zasp in Zambia's aim is that, in the future the project can be financed without aid contributions.
Carpentry
This started with a carpentry bench under a mango tree where Zasp manager Patrick trained 3 carpenters. There is now a large carpentry work shop with Swedish machinery, being driven for several hours daily by a diesel generator.
Seven clever carpenters make doors and furniture which, because of its good quality, is highly sought after in the entire Lundazi district. Carpentry generates a valuable source of income for Zasp. As soon as Zasp has electricity, these machines will operate all day and production will increase significantly.
We hope that carpentry will be the most important source of income, making the project economically self sufficient.
Bread baking
Whilst the generator is in action, even the cooker and oven in the canteen can be used. Bread is baked almost daily and the sold in the Zasp shop.
The shop
The Zasp shop is an important local shop at the project centre. Imagine not having to walk 25 km to town to buy salt, sugar, soap etc! This is also a pleasant meeting place for a chat and catching up on the latest news!
Dressmakers workshop
The first sewing machine was purchased in 1994 and currently there are foot driven, hand driven and electric machines in the workshop.3 women and 1 man work here, making for example, school uniforms which school pupils in Zambia have to wear. They also make nice bags which are sold in the Zasp shop. These bags can even be purchased from some of our members.
