Education, Democracy and Equality
Education plays an important part in the fight against poverty. Right from its start in 1989 Zasp has been concerned with schools and teaching. Education is even important for social and democratic development. The aim is to create conditions for a good basic education, giving democratic schooling, making both women and men more aware of the importance of equality.
Schools and Adult education
There are 3 schools in the project area. Zasp has set up 7 school buildings offering 1000 pupils a good schooling. In some villages there is adult education attended mainly by women.
Computer studies
In the entire Zasp project area, people live in simple mud huts with grass roofs, cooking food over an open fire outside. Computer education is in strong contrast to this lifestyle but administrative personnel, school teachers and pupils have shown an interest in this. Beginners' classes are held in Zasps computer room and the level of interest is constantly increasing.
Study workshops
Study workshops have recently started and for the villagers is a new form of education. Local experience and knowledge is utilized. This is a locally adapted form of education which is conducted on the villagers own terms.
Orphaned children
In the "Children's Project" Zasp's monthly sponsors donate to a group of orphaned children. This project also supports local village schools which are run by volunteers.Become a monthly sponsor.
Democratic awareness
After its independence in 1964, Zambia was a "one party state" for almost 30 years and has no democratic traditions. Through, for instance, a democratically elected board and organisation of village council and committees, Zasp encourages democratic awareness and equality.
